Application: Chelator of divalent cations. Inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity.
Application: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has been used along with Na2HPO4 and citric acid for preparing Na2EDTA-McIlvaine buffer. Aqueous solution of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has also been used for photocatalytic hydrogen production
Biochem/physiol Actions: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate is a widely used chelator of divalent cations like Ca+2 and inhibits metal ion-dependent proteases such as calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. EDTA also acts as a chelator of the zinc ion in the active site of metalloproteases; thus it inhibits metalloproteases that requires zinc for activity. Additionally, EDTA prevents platelet aggregation and is a preferred anticoagulant for platelet counts.
