Application: Caffeine melting point standard 235-237 °C finds its use in the characterization of pure chemicals and pharmaceutical compounds.
Biochem/physiol Actions: A central nervous system stimulant believed to act through adenosine receptors and monoamine neurotransmitters. It is an adenosine receptor antagonist and adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Thus, levels of cAMP increase in cells following treatment with caffeine. It has been reported to affect cellular calcium levels, releasing calcium from intracellular stores. It overrides the cell cycle effects of various chemicals such as protease inhibitors, preventing apoptosis; and it has been shown to inhibit cellular DNA repair mechanisms.
Features and Benefits: •  Melting point calibration standard traceable to primary standards (LGC, London)
•  Grade: Analytical Standard
•  Standard deviation up to ± 0.3 °C
•  Provided with certificates of analysis and safety data sheet

General description: Melting point standard 235-237 °C, caffeine is useful to calibrate melting point instruments, in the thermodynamic mode of measurement. The value of its melting point is determined with an average of 6 to 12 measurements using a Büchi B-545 instrument that is calibrated against primary standards.
