Application: | This analytical standard can also be used as follows:• Development of a Near-infrared spectroscopic (NIRS) technique for the quantitative analysis of lycopene in dehydrated tomato samples • Multi-residue analysis of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, folic acid, ascorbic acid, retinol, γ-tocopherol, phylloquinone, lycopene, and β-carotene in cherry tomato and pharmaceutical formulation samples using liquid chromatography (LC) combined with UV detection • Quantitative analysis of nine carotenoids in dietary supplement samples by an ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography-photodiode array detection (UHPSFC-PDA) based method • Simultaneous determination of lycopene and ubidecarenone in their combined pharmaceutical dosage form by reversed phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) coupled with UV detection at 400 nm, in accordance with International Conference on Harmonization ICH Q2 R guidelines • Raman spectroscopic analysis of orange-fleshed sweet potato samples to measure their carotenoid content • Simultaneous measurement of chlorophylls (a & b) and carotenoids (β-carotene and lycopene) in fruit samples of strawberry, apricot, and raspberry by two UV-vis spectrophotometric methods |
Biochem/physiol Actions: | Antioxidant micronutrient of tomatoes associated with decreased risk for cancer and cardiovascular disease. Enhances gap juction communication between cells via upregulation of connexin 43 and reduces proliferation of cancer cells in culture. Inhibits cholesterol synthesis and enhances low-density lipoprotein degradation. |
General description: | Lycopene is a natural compound that belongs to the group of non-provitamin carotenoids and is responsible for the red color of tomatoes and other red-colored fruits and vegetables. It shows a stronger anti-oxidant activity compared to the other carotenoids. |
