Application: Acetaminophen has been used:
• as an anti-inflammatory drug to test its effect in lipid peroxidation in marine mussels
• to test its effect on neurite outgrowth in gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic and glutamatergic neurons
• as a hepatocellular injury inducing agent in mice

Application: Analgesic.
Biochem/physiol Actions: Acetaminophen or paracetamol is an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis. It is complexed with arachidonic acid in central nervous system resulting in the formation of N-arachidonoylphentolamine, which is essential for the activation of cannabinoid receptor. Acetaminophen is metabolized to toxic N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine. Paracetamol is prescribed for osteoarthritis pain and inhibits cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 activities. It is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 enzymes in liver and is implicated in liver toxicity.
General description: Acetaminophen or paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic. It is however a weak non opioid analgesic.
