Application: Chelator of divalent cations. Inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity.
Application: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dehydrate has been used as a component:
• of radioimmunoprecipitation assay buffer (RIPA buffer) for preparation of C2C12 mouse skeletal myoblasts whole cell lysate
• of lysis buffer and IgG resin wash and equilibration buffer for the purification of human proteasome regulatory particles (RPs)
• of M-buffer for the isolation of human cardiomyocyte progenitor cells (CMPCs) from fetal heart

Biochem/physiol Actions: Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is an anticoagulant, majorly used in preventing clotting of blood. EDTA may trigger aggregation of platelets resulting in pseudothrombocytopenia. EDTA along with tetracycline serves as a root conditioning agent and provides relief in gum infection. EDTA-tetracycline therapy decreases coronary artery calcium levels in atherosclerosis. Calcium disodium EDTA administration is effective in slowing down the progression of chronic kidney disease. It also enhances the antimicrobial functionality of lysozyme and improves shelf life of cheese.
General description: EDTA is a chelator of divalent cations. It inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity.
