Biochem/physiol Actions: | Collagen is a basic unit for the growth and support of various cells and tissues in the body. Collagen may be involved in wound healing. Collagen might promote cell adhesion and proliferation when used as a coating on iron-manganese alloys (Fe-30%Mn) scaffolds in orthopedic applications. |
General description: | Collagen is a major fibrous, structural protein in animals. It is a key component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is predominantly present in the connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, and cornea. Collagens consist of three parallel left-handed polypeptide chains coiled to form a right-handed triple helix. They also have a globular domain. |
