Application: | Potassium iodide has been used: • to inhibit active oxygen as a component of processes such as DNA damage • as a chaotropic agent which, in high concentrations can dissolve a gel matrix • in the recovery of DNA from gel slices by gel dissolution |
Biochem/physiol Actions: | Potassium iodide (KI) consists of halogen iodine and the alkali metal potassium. It is used in the form of iodized salt to treat endemic goiter. KI is also used to treat hyperthyroidism and radiation protection of the thyroid gland. KI is useful for the preoperative preparation of patients with Grave′s disease. It also finds its use in treating dermatological conditions like cutaneous sporotrichosis and various inflammatory dermatoses. KI is commonly used as an expectorant. It inhibits the capacity of neutrophils to produce e toxic oxygen intermediates hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals in vitro. |
