Biochem/physiol Actions: Sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) regulates de novo lipogenesis. It can be used as a biomarker and a therapeutic target due to its function as an oncogene and a pro-proliferation factor in thyroid cancer. It bind to a sequence in the promoter of different genes, called sterol regulatory element-1 (SRE1). Upon cleavage of the precursor form of the protein, SREBF1 gets translated into the nucleus where it induces transcription of genes involved in glucose metabolism and fatty acid and lipid production. Sterols block cleavage of the precursor protein inhibiting transcription.
