| Biochem/physiol Actions: | SHMT2 gene encodes an enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase 2 (mitochondrial), which is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that regulates the biosynthesis of thymidylate in mammals. It catalyzes the reversible reaction of serine and tetrahydrofolate to glycine and 5,10-methylene tetrahydrofolate. Additionally, it facilitates the interconversion of serine and glycine and is associated with mitochondrial DNA which assists in preventing the uracil accumulation in mtDNA. |
