| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) belongs to a family of secreted proteins called neurotrophins that includes, nerve growth factor (NGF), neurotrophin-3 (NT3) and NT4/5. BDNF is expressed in the developing and the mature brain. The downstream pathways promoted by BDNF include PI3K, MAPK and JAK/STAT. The most important role of BDNF is the regulation of synaptic transmission and plasticity, protein synthesis and phosphorylation of local proteins. |
