| Application: | Furosemide has been used: • to investigate the influence of timing of dexamethasone administration on auditory hair cell survival in mice • to study its effect on intracranial pressure (ICP) after subcutaneous administration in rats • as a stimulant for renin release and subsequent increase in plasma angiotensin II (ANG II) |
| Biochem/physiol Actions: | "High ceiling" diuretic that strongly affects renal tubular action by increasing renal blood flow; antihypertensive. |
| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Furosemide can block the Na+/K+/2Cl- co-transporter in the ascending thick loop of Henle. It can enhance the synthesis of intrarenal prostaglandin. It enhances its ototoxicity in animals when used along with kanamycin. Furosemide is linked with thiamine insufficiency in individuals with heart failure. |
| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Inhibits ion co-transport in the kidney. |
