Application: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase from Leuconostoc mesenteroides has been used:

• in the coupled spectrophotometric assay for PGI (F6P to G6P reaction)
• to study the starch time course using Nicotiana tabacum leaves
• to determine the glucose content in the root and stem samples of Quercus velutina Lam. saplings
• to assay glucose using a starch sample of wild-type and transgenic Arabidopsis whole seedlings
Biochem/physiol Actions: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) catalyzes the conversion of glucose-6-phosphate to 6-phosphogluconolacetone as the first step in the pentose phosphate pathway.
Biochem/physiol Actions: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is expressed in all tissues and produces the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), which aids the cells to prevent oxidative stress. Insufficiency of G6PD is an X-linked, hereditary genetic defect. It is caused due to a common mutation in the G6PD gene.
Other Notes: One unit will oxidize 1.0 μmole of D-glucose 6-phosphate to 6-phospho-D-gluconate per min in the presence of NAD at pH 7.8 at 30 °C.
