| Biochem/physiol Actions: | CYB5R3 (cytochrome b5 reductase 3) gene encodes cytochrome b5 reductase that may be either in the membrane-bound form in somatic cell or in the soluble form in erythrocytes. The membrane-bound form is found anchored to the ER and is involved in desaturation and elongation of fatty acids, cholesterol biosynthesis, and in drug metabolism. It has both membrane-binding and catalytic domains. The soluble form has only the catalytic domain and functions in methemoglobin reduction. It is involved in the regulation of NAD+/NADH ratio, in turn affecting aerobic metabolism and aging processes. Defects in this gene cause methemoglobinemias. |
