| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Solute carrier family 16, member 1(SLC16A1) gene encodes a proton-coupled monocarboxylate transporter that catalyzes the transport of many monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids, acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and acetate.The protein is essential for normal assimilation of nutrients. It is coexpressed with lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) in basal-like breast cancer. It is found to be expressed on tumor cells. It serves as a potential therapeutic target for high-risk neuroblastomas. Mutation in SLC16A1 causes profound ketoacidosis characterized with imbalanced hepatic production and extrahepatic utilization of ketone bodies. |
