| Biochem/physiol Actions: | ACSS2 encodes a cytosolic enzyme, acetyl-CoA synthetase (ACS). It is highly essential along with Hypoxia Inducible Factor 2 (HIF-2) for maximal colony formation, proliferation, migration, and invasion during stress. It stimulates the activation reaction of acetate for lipid synthesis and energy generation. Acetate plays a major role in almost all of the metabolic pathways. Monomeric form of the ACSS2 generates acetate in a ATP dependent reaction. The activity is controlled by sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs). It is clinically associated with the cancer cell growth under low-oxygen and lipid-depleted conditions. |
