| Biochem/physiol Actions: | FAM163A (family with sequence similarity 163, member A) is up-regulated in neuroblastoma, as opposed to normal tissues and adult and pediatric cancers. It therefore, plays a role in tumorigenesis of neuroblastoma. This might be achieved by it acting as a ligand for growth factors receptors. It prevents anoikis and supports anchorage independent growth, via ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinases)-mediated proliferation pathway. FAM163A can therefore, be used as therapeutic target in neuroblastoma. Its mRNA levels also correlate with the risk level in neuroblastoma, and thus, have potential as a marker to determine the metastasis in bone marrow. |

| General description: | FAM163A (family with sequence similarity 163, member A) is a secreted protein, which is also called neuroblastoma-derived secretory protein (NDSP). This gene is located on human chromosome 1q25.2. The encoded protein contains a C-C motif and a signal peptide made of 30 amino acids. It consists of 167 amino acids, and is secreted as both, a monomer and a homodimer. Its molecular weight is 18kDa. It is normally expressed in adrenal gland, brain, thymus, colon, ileum, uterus, and testes, where it has the highest level of expression in testes. |
