| Biochem/physiol Actions: | RPL10 (ribosomal protein L10) is supposed to play an essential role in ribosomal assembly and function. It is incorporated in ribosome in the cytoplasm, and this incorporation is necessary for the initiation of translation. It interacts with nuclear-export adapter NMD3p, which acts as a nuclear export signal, and facilitates the transport of the ribosomal complex to the nucleus. Therefore, it plays a key role in the maturation of the ribosomal complex, and the synthesis of proteins. Studies show that mutations in this gene might be linked to premature ovarian failure. It acts as a transcription co-factor inhibiting the activity of AP (activating protein)-1 transcription factor. Studies show that down-regulation of RPL10 might be linked to the initial stages of prostate cancer. However, at later stages it is up-regulated and this might promote the development of an aggressive phenotype. |

| General description: | RPL10 (ribosomal protein L10) is a part of 60s ribosomal subunit, and is highly conserved in nature. It is localized to human chromosome Xq28. It is a ribosomal protein which belongs to L10e family. It is composed of 214 amino acids, and the core domain is made of amino acids 34-182. It has a two layered α-β structure, and its C-terminal resides in the outer surface of the ribosome. It is also a putative tumor suppressor gene. |
