| Biochem/physiol Actions: | TOMM20 (Translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 20) is a major mitochondrial protein receptor involved in the cytosolic protein import phenomena. It is localized in the cytoplasm of spiral ganglia neurons. It functions as a subunit of a protein import complex to identify and translocate specific cytosolic proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane. Study shows that TOMM20 acts as a biomarker in identifying the mitochondrial mass and oxidative phosphorylation in several cancer types. |
| Biochem/physiol Actions: | TOMM20 anchors on the mitochondrial outer membrane via its N-terminal domain. The C-terminal region functions as a receptor for mitochondrial precursor proteins. The tetratrico peptide repeat (TPR) mediates protein-protein interactions. TOMM20 interacts with α-synuclein leading to the inhibition of mitochondrial protein import. Aberration in this interaction is implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson′s disease. |
