| Biochem/physiol Actions: | The gene TMEM204 (transmembrane protein 204) encodes a tetraspan adherens junction protein that is hypoxically regulated. It may be involved in the regulation of cell adhesion, paracellular permeability and angiogenesis. Over expression of this protein leads to reduced adhesion between cells and variation of its junctional barrier function. |

| General description: | The gene TMEM204 (transmembrane protein 204) encodes a four transmembrane spanning protein that is commonly called CLP24 (claudin-like protein of 24kDa). It is found to be homologous to myelin protein 22/epithelial membrane protein 1/claudin family of cell junction proteins. These homologous proteins modulate paracellular permeability. The encoded protein contains a protein-protein interaction domain at the C-terminus. It is abundantly expressed in lung, heart, kidney and placental tissues. It localizes to cell-cell junctions and is found to exist along with the β-catenin adherens junction-associated protein. It does not co-exist with tight junctions. |
