It plays an important role in the development of normal hearing and vision. A homozygous nonsense mutation in humans is associated with progressive auditory neuropathy, characterized by severe myopia and deafness. |

| General description: | The gene SLITRK6 (SLIT and NTRK like family member 6) encodes an integral membrane protein of the Slitrk family of proteins, which contain two leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains and a carboxy-terminal domain. This 841-amino acid protein is expressed in the auditory system during embryonic and postnatal life, with the strongest expression in the inner ear. It is expressed to a lesser extent in the thalamus and lateral geniculate nucleus, and not expressed in the cortex. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 13q31.1. |
