| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Serine protease inhibitor A6 (Serpin A6) carries most of the cortisol in circulation. Neutrophil elastase can cleave Serpin A6 at its exposed reactive centre loop. This decreases its affinity for cortisol, thus aiding in the release of cortisol at the site of inflammation. SERPINA6 is an important plasma binding protein of glucocorticoids and transports them in the blood thus controlling the tissue availability of these hormones. |

It is a glycosylated plasma protein consisting of 383 amino acids. SERPINA6 has six sites for N-glycosylation and the gene encoding it is localized on chromosome 14q32.1. It is also referred as CBG (Corticosteroid-binding globulin). |
