| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Ataxin-2 (ATXN2) takes part in regulating cell growth, proliferation and alters trans-active response DNA-binding protein 43kDa (TDP-43). It may be involved in binding to cis-regulatory elements of mRNAs to stabilize them with the help of poly-(A)-binding protein cytoplasmic 1 (PABPC1). This function of ATXN2 helps to keep a check on the metabolism of RNAs. Mutation in the gene encoding this protein has been associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2). |
