| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Mitochondrial topoisomerase 1 (TOP1MT) enzyme relieves the topological stress of mitochondrial DNA by creating transient breaks in the DNA using a conserved tyrosine as the catalytic residue. Mutation in this gene might be responsible for mitochondrial disorders with neurodegenerative and myopathy components or to late-onset degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer′s disease, Parkinson′s syndrome, and diabetes. |

| General description: | Mitochondrial topoisomerase 1 gene (TOP1MT) codes for type IB topoisomerase enzyme. TOP1mt gene consisting of 14 exons is mapped to human chromosome 8q24.3. Size of the protein varies between 60 and 70kDa. Optimum enzyme activity is at alkaline pH. As the name suggest this enzyme is exclusively targeted to mitochondria. TOP1MT enzyme is highly expressed in hematological cancer cells. |
