Application: Meloxicam sodium salt hydrate has been used:
• as a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor in solid Ehrlich tumor
• as an alternative to diclofenac nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) to treat vultures
• as a reference standard in liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS)
• to test its effect on prostaglandin (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COX-2 protein expression in RAW246.7 cells
Biochem/physiol Actions: Meloxicam, a member of the oxicam family, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is synthesized from piroxicam with aryl and the pyridyl ring substitution. Meloxicam is a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, it may be useful in treating inflammation and pain. Meloxicam has been shown to stop thymulin-induced increas in concentration of cytokines and Nerve growth factor (NGF) in the liver of rats. Meloxicam also suppresses tumor growth and may be capable of antagonizing cachexia in vitro. It promotes apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma.
