| Application: | Nicotinamide has been used as a medium supplement in organoid culture of intestinal stem cells, esophageal squamous cell carcinomas(ESCC), pancreatic cancer organoids and pancreatic progenitor induction. |
| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Nicotinamide is an amide derivative of vitamin B3 and a PARP inhibitor |
| General description: | Nicotinamide (NAM) belongs to vitamin B family and is the amide form of vitamin B3. NAM is present in food and is a constituent of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Tryptophan is the precursor for NAM synthesis in liver. NAM controls cell metabolism, redox reactions, mitochondrial functionsand energy generation. It promotes natural killer cells proliferation and survival. NAM confers neuroprotection and promotes neuronal maturation. It has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and may provide protection in ischaemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. NAM may elicit therapeutic benefits in Alzheimer′s, Parkinson′s, and Huntington′s diseases. |
