| Application: | Oil red O is a lysochrome (fat-soluble dye) diazo dye used for staining of neutral triglycerides and lipids on frozen sections and some lipoproteins on paraffin sections. In histology, a supersaturated solution of oil red O in isopropanol may be used to stain fat in tissue. |
| Application: | Oil red O solution has been used to identify intracytoplasmatic lipid droplets on 3T3-L1 cell line adipocytes and to measure lipid content in Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (SGBS) preadipocytes. |
| General description: | Oil Red O stains and imparts red-orange color to lipids. It has also been shown to mark vacuoles, observed in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL-L3) or Burkitt’s lymphoma/leukemia. Oil Red O staining is done on fresh samples, as alcohol fixation removes lipids. |
