| Biochem/physiol Actions: | C-reactive protein (CRP) is part of the pentraxin protein family and is synthesized in the liver. It is a marker of systemic inflammation and may also have a role in atherosclerosis, stroke and myocardial infarction. Levels of CRP increase during tissue damage and trauma. The protein acts as an opsonin and binds to phospholipids on tumor cell membranes. This may lead to lysis of tumor cells. CRP is also a biomarker of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). |
