| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is a pluripotential cytokine that plays a vital role in the homeostasis of peripheral CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells and regulation of FOXP3 (forkhead box P3) expression in vivo. Binding of TGF-β1 to its receptor, activates members of the SMAD protein family involved in gene regulation. Study shows that reduced expression of circulating transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) might contribute to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) development. Polymorphism of TGF-β1 is associated with pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and pneumoconiosis. Serum TGF-β1 expression is elevated in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Serum TGF-β1 functions as a potential biomarker of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and SSc. |
