| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Gremlin-1 (GREM1) has a role in embryogenesis. It also has a role in cell functions during development. GREM1 acts as an antagonist of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). The protein influences chondrogenesis, outgrowth and apoptosis in limb bud development and has a role in kidney formation. It inhibits the activity of BMP2 and BMP4. GREM1 is involved in angiogenesis, bone formation, bone mass and pulmonary hypertension. Knockout of this gene in mice leads to developmental abnormalities. |
