| General description: | Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase-1 (SMPD1) gene encodes for acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase), which is involved in the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramides and phosphorylcholine in the late endosomes and lysosomes. Ceramides act as proinflammatory and proapoptotic second messengers. Mutations in the SMPD1 gene are associated with a lack of aSMase, leading to Niemann-Pick disease type A and B. The SMPD1 gene is mapped to the human chromosome at 11p15.1–11p15.4. |
