| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Tight junction protein 1 (TJP1) or zona occludens protein 1 (ZO1) has a role in the formation of epithelial lumens. It interacts with occludin and modulates tight junction barrier regulation. ZO1 is also involved in the formation of the odontoblast layer and in actomyosin cytoskeleton regulation. Low expression of ZO1 has been linked to increased cell invasiveness in breast cancer, colorectal cancer and digestive tract cancers. |

| General description: | Tight junction protein 1 (TJP1) or zona occludens protein 1 (ZO1) is an adaptor protein. It acts as a scaffold protein between the tight junction and actin cytoskeleton. ZO1 has a molecular weight of 220kDa and is part of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase homolog family. The protein possesses three PDZ domains at its amino terminal, an SH3 domain and a region which bears homology to guanylate kinase. The ZO1 gene is localized on human chromosome 15q13.1. |
