| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 1 (ANKRD1) acts as a transcriptional regulator for cardiomyogenesis. It interacts with calsequestrin-2, intermediate filament protein desmin, and with Y-box transcription factor 1 (YB-1). Elevated expression of ANKRD1 is implicated in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) coordinates with ANKRD1 for its entry and propagation. It serves as a co-activator of the p53 tumor suppressor protein and may regulate apoptosis in human ovarian cancer cells. |

| General description: | The protein encoded by this gene is localized to the nucleus of endothelial cells and is induced by IL-1 and TNF-alpha stimulation. Studies in rat cardiomyocytes suggest that this gene functions as a transcription factor.
