| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in hippocampal function and verbal episodic memory in humans. Variation in the BDNF gene expression alters these neurological functions. BDNF also plays a vital role in vascular function and participates in angiogenesis via the specific receptor tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB). ProBDNF interacts with the p75 neurotrophin receptor, leading to long-term depression in the hippocampus. |

| General description: | The brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene is mapped to human chromosome 11p14.1. |
| General description: | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the nerve growth factor family. It is induced by cortical neurons, and is necessary for survival of striatal neurons in the brain. Expression of this gene is reduced in both Alzheimer′s and Huntington disease patients. This gene may play a role in the regulation of stress response and in the biology of mood disorders. Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described for this gene.
