| Biochem/physiol Actions: | The gene ALOX5 (arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase) encodes a lipoxygenase that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid (AA) and other fatty acids to bioactive compounds such as 5(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraen |

| General description: | The gene encoding arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5) is localized on human chromosome 10q11.21 and has 13 introns. It spans a region of 71.9 kbp. The ALOX5 protein consists of 673 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 77.9 kDa. It possesses two domains, a regulatory C2-like domain that binds to calcium and a carboxy-terminal catalytic domain. ALOX5 is expressed in B cells, dendritic cells, mast cells, macrophages and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. |
| General description: | This gene encodes a member of the lipoxygenase gene family and plays a dual role in the synthesis of leukotrienes from arachidonic acid. The encoded protein, which is expressed specifically in bone marrow-derived cells, catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to 5(S)-hydroperoxy-6-trans- |
