| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Slc16a3 is a proton-linked monocarboxylate transporter. It catalyses the rapid transport across the plasma membrane of many monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids derived from leucine, valine and isoleucine, and the ketone bodies acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetate. MCT4 is upregulated in the hypoxic environment in glioblastoma, and is implicated in solid tumours like breast cancer and bladder cancer and leads to metastasis. |
