It is involved in several cellular processes including cellular adhesion, in the regulation of oligodendrocyte microtubule stability and facilitates the interactions between myelin and the immune system. It has been reported that MOG may be involved in the completion and/or maintenance of the myelin sheath, and in cell-cell communication. It has also been observed that mutation or polymorphisms in MOG gene could cause multiple sclerosis. |

| General description: | Myelin/oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the large immunoglobulin superfamily. It is a 26-28kDa glycoprotein localized on chromosome 6p21.3. It consists of an extracellular immunoglobulin-like domain and two hydrophobic regions. It is expressed on the surface of myelinating oligodendrocytes and external lamellae of myelin sheaths in the central nervous system. |
