| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Ikaros family zinc finger protein 1 (IKZF1)/IKAROS activity is essential for the generation of B cell precursors. Ikaros is essential at the earliest stage of T cell and B cell specification. In adults, however, lymphoid lineages rely on Ikaros at distinct phases of their development. Mutations or polymorphisms are associated with human B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Ikaros functions as a tumor suppressor in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and B-ALL. Ikaros deletion was detected in patients with blast-phase myeloproliferative neoplasms. |

The IKAROS gene encodes a family of hemopoietic specific zinc finger transcriptional regulator proteins, which binds to specific DNA target sequences consisting of TGGGAA consensus motif. |
