Biochem/physiol Actions: Upregulation of INOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) is observed during infections, tissue injury, and inflammation. INOS is responsible to produce NO (nitric oxide), which controls blood flow by inducing vascular relaxation. NO acts as a neurotransmitter and can facilitate immune responses. NO can also bring about anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects in response to oxidative stress, hypoxia, inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ), and lipopolysaccharide endotoxin. iNOS generates more NO than the neuronal and endothelial NOS. Unlike the two isoforms, iNOS is calcium independent. INOS might be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
