| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Aurora kinase A (AURKA) is involved in maintaining the stability of mitosis and chromosomes. During mitosis, AURKA participates in centrosome maturation control, mitotic entry, bipolar spindle formation, and segregation. AURKA also participates in chromosome alignment and cytokinesis. It controls several oncogenic signaling pathways. AURKA plays a major role in the self-renewal, reprogramming, and differentiation of stem cells. Knockdown of AURKA gene affects the maturation of the centrosome. Abnormality in the AURKA gene leads to aberrant cell division and aneuploidy, which in turn affects the stability of the genome and contributes to carcinogenesis. Overexpression of the AURKA gene is seen in gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and liver cancers. It can act as a candidate gene to predict colorectal adenocarcinoma. |
