| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is involved in regulation of mitosis. PLK1 plays a crucial role in centrosome-mediated microtubule events and spindle assembly. PLK1 expression is elevated in cancer tissues. Thus, it can be used as a potential prognostic marker for several cancers, including non-small-cell lung cancer, squamous-cell carcinomas of the head and neck, melanomas, colorectal cancer, oropharyngeal carcinomas, and ovarian and endometrial carcinomas. PLK1 recruited to centrosomes during S-phase by centrosomal protein FOP-related protein of 20kDa (FOR20), plays a vital role in S-phase progression. The protein also plays an essential role in central spindle formation and cytokinesis. PLK1 inhibitors might act as a potential therapeutics in cancer treatment. |
