Biochem/physiol Actions: The gene CACNB1 (calcium voltage-gated channel auxiliary subunit β 1) encodes the human brain β1 subunit of voltage dependent calcium channels called dihydropyridine receptors (DHPR). They detect changes in membrane voltage by activating ryanodine receptors to release Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum into the cytosol, leading to excitation–contraction (EC) coupling.

General description: The gene CACNB1 (calcium voltage-gated channel auxiliary subunit β 1) encodes a member of the calcium channel β subunit family. The gene spanning a length of 25kb contains 13 exons and is mapped to human chromosome 17. Alternative splicing at exons 7 and 13 produces β1a,β1b and βlc isoforms.
