| Biochem/physiol Actions: | PTEN induced kinase 1 (PINK1) participates in mitochondrial component biogenesis. It mediates the translation of mitochondrial respiratory chain subunits encoding nuclear mRNAs. The kinase domain region of PINK1 gene harbors most of the mutations. Mutations in the PINK1 gene are implicated in early-onset Parkinson′s disease (PD). The accumulation of PINK1 in dysfunctional mitochondria marks them for degradation. PINK1 is also implicated in the pathophysiology of cancer, diabetes, and pulmonary fibrosis. |
