| Biochem/physiol Actions: | IL-3 (interleukin 3) plays a key role in the differentiation of murine hematopoietic progenitor cells and the activation and survival of mature myeloid cells. This protein was originally termed as multicolony-stimulating factor (multi-CSF) because of its capability to induce the differentiation of a wide variety of hematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow, such as mast cells, basophils, neutrophils, eosinophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, erythrocytes, and megakaryocytes. IL-3 promotes mast cell growth, differentiation, and mediator release, hence, suggesting a role in allergic inflammation. In mice, it is involved in suppressing protective immunity against Plasmodium berghei NK651, and prevents the development of splenomegaly, anemia, and erythropoiesis. It functions as a regulator of osteoclastogenesis, where it play a dual role- it facilitate the development of osteoclast progenitors but suppresses the osteoclastogenic process. |
| General description: | IL-3 (interleukin 3) is primarily produced by activated CD4+ T cells and mast cells, and is a multi-lineage hematopoietic growth factor and immunoregulatory cytokine. Recombinant murine IL-3 is a 15.1 kDa globular protein containing 135 amino acid residues. |
