| Biochem/physiol Actions: | As implied by their name, BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) promote and regulate bone development, growth, remodeling and repair, in both prenatal development and postnatal growth of eye, heart, kidney, skin, and other tissues. BMP-12 regulates chondrogenesis, bone morphogenesis, and neuron differentiation. It also has a role in seminal vesicle development. |
| General description: | BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) belong to the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. BMP-12 is highly conserved across species. The gene encoding this protein is localized on human chromosome 2. Recombinant human BMP-12 is a 27kDa disulfide-linked homodimer containing two 122 amino acid polypeptide chains. |
