Application: | Procalcitonin human has been used in in vitro vascular permeability assay. |
Biochem/physiol Actions: | Procalcitonin is a prohormone of calcitonin. Levels of unprocessed procalcitonin rise significantly after bacterial infection, trauma or shock. Procalcitonin is also associated with systemic complications in humans suffering from acute pancreatitis. |
General description: | The gene CALC1 (calcitonin 1) is mapped to human chromosome 11. CALC1 encodes for preprocalcitonin. Preprocalcitonin is cleaved by endopeptidase at the amino-terminal to produce procalcitonin. Procalcitonin works as a peptide hormone and is mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung. Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin. Recombinant human procalcitonin produced in Escherichia coli is a single, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 116 amino acids with a molecular weight of 12,796 Daltons. |
