Biochem/physiol Actions: | p300 is involved in the regulation of gene implicated in controlling cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, cell cycle, and DNA repair. As this protein also functions as an acetyltransferase, it is capable of modulating nucleosomal histones, and thus, affects chromatin structure. It is also involved in modulating the transcriptional pathways in embryonic stem (ES) cells as it controls the transcription of OCT4 (octamer-binding transcription factor 4), NANOG and SOX2 (SRY (sex determining region Y)-box) genes. In human dental pulp cells (HDPCs), p300 is involved in controlling the expression of major pluripotency genes and modulating ontogenic differentiation. This protein is essential for skeletal myogenic differentiation, where p300 itself is regulated in an Akt signaling-mediated manner. |
General description: | p300 is a transcriptional coactivator belonging to the family of lysine acetyltransferase 3 (KAT3) family of histone acetyltransferase (HAT), and was initially recognized as an adenoviral E1A-binding protein. It has a molecular weight of 300kDa. It is a large, widely expressed nuclear protein. |
Other Notes: | Human p300 is fused to a His-tag. |
