Biochem/physiol Actions: | Cluster of differentiation 81 (CD81) has a role in membrane organization, cell-cell interactions, cellular fusion and protein trafficking. It is also implicated in receptor clustering and signaling. CD81 acts as a putative receptor for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and facilitates the HCV glycoprotein-dependent viral cell entry. Elevated expression of the gene has been observed in various types of cancers. |

General description: | Cluster of differentiation 81(CD81), also known as target of antiproliferative antibody 1 (TAPA-1), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 11p15.5. The encoded protein belongs to the tetraspanin family and is mainly expressed on the oocyte surface. CD81 is characterized with a five large helical segments. |
General description: | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Most of these members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The proteins mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. This encoded protein is a cell surface glycoprotein that is known to complex with integrins. This protein appears to promote muscle cell fusion and support myotube maintenance. Also it may be involved in signal transduction. This gene is localized in the tumor-suppressor gene region and thus it is a candidate gene for malignancies. (provided by RefSeq) |
