It plays an important role in trophoblast cell fusion and invasion by enhancing the expression of syncytin-1 and syncytin-2 fusogenic proteins and high-temperature requirement protein A4 (HtrA4), a serine protease. Disruption in the activity of this gene can result in defective placental development, thereby leading to embryonic death. |
