| Biochem/physiol Actions: | Glycoprotein-N- acetylgalactosamine 3-β- galactosyltransferase 1 (C1GALT1) functions in the addition of galactose onto GalNAc residues of IgA1. Thus, it generates the core 1 O-glycan Galβ1-3GalNAα1-SerThr (T antigen), which is a precursor for many extended O-glycans in glycoproteins. A deficiency of C1GALT1 results in IgA nephropathy, Tn syndrome and also Henoch-Schönlein purpura. It increases the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma cells by regulating MET glycosylation and dimerization. C1GALT1 also regulates angiogenesis, kidney development and thrombopoiesis. |
