Application: Glacial acetic acid USP reference standard for use in specified quality tests and assays. It is also used to prepare standard solution by using liquid chromatography coupled to a UV detector according to the general chapter of United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Based directly on official monographs published in the USP-NF, these highly characterized physical specimens are used in testing by pharmaceutical and related industries to help ensure the identity, strength, quality, and purity of peptide-based medicines.

Further information is available in the general chapter, 503- ACETIC ACID IN PEPTIDES, USP43-NF38 - 6741 of the USP (United States Pharmacopeia).
General description: Glacial acetic acid is the trivial name used to describe pure acetic acid in an anhydrous state. It is a clear and hygroscopic weak acid, typically available in concentrations ranging from 99.5% to 100%. The name "glacial" refers to the ice-like crystals that form at a temperature slightly below room temperature (16.6°C or 61.9°F), like the German term "Eisessig" (ice-vinegar). Despite being classified as a weak acid, glacial acetic acid is a corrosive poison that can cause harm or even be fatal when in contact with human tissue. Improper storage and handling of glacial acetic acid can pose inherent risks and may lead to patient injuries if not appropriately diluted. Acetic acid/acetate is a common counter ion in peptide preparations.
Glacial acetic acid USP reference standard is provided as delivered and specified by the issuing Pharmacopoeia.
